Our Story

Hi!  I'm Heidi.  Rural Roots is the fulfillment of a long-time dream of mine.  Born and raised up the road in New Lowell, I earned an Honours degree in Regional Planning and International Development at Nipissing University but quickly realized that what I really loved was local agriculture and horticulture.  In 2010, I opened Rural Roots Greenhouse on my parents' farm and that same year also started offering a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program (for more on that, visit the CSA page).

2026 marks the beginning of our 17th year in business!  In looking back over the past years, I am still blown away by the wonderful community support of my small enterprise that ensures I'm privileged enough to be doing something I love in the community I love.  Seventeen years have seen a lot of changes.  The Handsome Goat Farmer (AKA Edwin) and I were married in 2011 and our daughter (the "Future Farmer") was born in 2015.  In 2017 we moved the operation to our farm on Airport Road from the original location that my parents had generously allowed me to rent on their New Lowell farm.  We’ve also been able to add some incredible team members to our farm who help us tend all of our many living things. This year finds me more excited than ever to start planting and sharing our plants, flowers and vegetables with you for another season.

We offer:

  • Spring Sale Days on the Farm: weekend sales in May/June for bedding plants, hanging baskets, vegetable transplants, seeds, shrubs, and much more.

  • A 15-week Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA) from July until Thanksgiving.

  • A Self Serve Vegetable and Flower stand in our Farm Store from May to December.

  • DIY Bulk Buckets of Fresh Flowers for weddings and events as well as Flower Design services.

  • Winter Urn planting.

  • Workshops

  • And more!

Just a final note: I chose the name Rural Roots to reflect my deep history in the local area.  Both sides of my family can trace their roots back several generations in New Lowell and area, and like them, I am proud to be part of the 'roots' of this community.  It is my hope that you will be able to put down some of your own ''rural roots'' with our flowers and plants.
